THE FLORA
La Scarpetta di Venere (Foto Archivio Ecotur)Many botanists studied the interesting and various flora of the Park. There are more than 2000 plants, not including musk, lichens and mushrooms. Among the endemic flowers there is Iris Marsica, in bloom in May- June. Many orchids colour the meadows of the Park in Spring. The most beautiful of them is Lady sleeper ( Cypripedium calceolus), presents only in few valleys of the Park crossed by rivers. Another endemic plant is the Black pine of Villetta Barrea (Pinus nigra), that grow up only in Camosciara and Val Fondillo. Among the conifers we remember Pinus mugo, a glacial plant presents at 1800 meters on sea level on Camosciara.

Most of the territory of the Park is covered by beech wood: the scientific name of this tree is Fagus sylvatica and remember the spontaneous origin of this plant on Italian Apennine. It grows up from 900m to 1800m of altitude. The beech wood covers more than 60% of the territory of the Park.

The highlands cover more than 30 % of the territory of the Park and occupied the high part of the mountains (1900-2000m). The vegetation is composed by several species of Gramineae and, in summer time, by gentians, primroses, cyclamens, violets and lilies. Splendid lilies are: red lily (Lilium bulbiferum croceum), lili martagon (Lilium martagon).
