| L'AQUILA |
Capital
of the region, L’Aquila preserves its historical characteristics in
art works. Among the religious monuments there are several churches
that testify an important artistic and historical values of the
city: the Duomo, dedicated to S. Massimo, built in XIII century,
with neoclassic front designed by Giovanni Battista Benedetti. S.
Maria di Collemaggio preserves the mortal remains of Celestino V and
has got Porta Santa, the only outside Rome, where is possible to ask
for indulgence every year in occasion of Perdonanza. The Castle, the
Renaissance and Baroque palaces are part of the civil architecture,
together with squares and fountains. There are several palaces along
the historical city centre: Palazzo Franchi Cappelli of Francesco
Fontana, Palazzo Carli, Casa Vicentini, Palazzo Dragonetti, Palazzo
di Margherita d’Austria, Palazzo Centi, Palazzo Camponeschi, built
XVI-XVII century. Many fountains decorate the city, but the most
important is 99 Cannelle, in memory of the 99 castles that founded
the city. L’Aquila offers several cultural activities such as
concerts and theatre and many natural beauties. |

| SULMONA |
Rounded
by the Abruzzo Parks and Maiella, it is the best door to visit the
nature of Abruzzo, but also rich in history, culture, architecture
of the old roman centre. It is possible to see the ruins of the old
wall around the city and many important doors, first of all Porta
Napoli with its splendid stones. Among the other monuments we
remember a part of the old water system of XIII century, with 21 big
arches and the Renaissance fountain of Vecchio, coasted on one side
by Piazza Garibaldi and the medieval Church of S. Francesco della
Scarpa, renovated in XVIII century.
Sulmona was the city of many princes, one Pope (Innocenzo III) and
many men of culture; it has a goldsmithry school, whose works are
still an alive tradition and form of art. The last Sunday in July,
takes place la Giostra Cavalleresca in Piazza Maggiore of Swabian
period. Sulmona is famous for its confetti all around the world,
song by Giacomo Leopardi (“give me two cannelloni di Sulmona”), now
offers in thousands colours and forms. |

SCANNO |
It is a
village in the middle of Abruzzo Apennine, famous for its historical
centre, decorated splendid palaces and monuments, testify of the
rich economic past of Scanno, due to the commerce of sheep and wool.
Many famous photographers included Scanno in their photos:
Cartier-Bresson, Giacomelli, Scianna. The most important monument is
S.Maria della Valle, with its Romanesque front; decorated with many
wooden and marble ornaments of artists of Pescocostanzo ann
Bencivenga of Raiano. |

| PESCOCOSTANZO |
It is one
of the most appreciated villages for tourism. Several palaces,
monuments and churches testify the extraordinary cultural history of
Pescocostanzo, whose historical centre is very well preserved. Many
traditional artistic works are still present: goldsmithry and iron
work and merletto a tombolo. |
