TREKKING
Wolves and Shepherds

Trekking of 8 days, of easy and splendid excursions, discovering the old “Tratturelli” (old way of shepherds) in the villages of the Abruzzo National Park (Pescasseroli, Opi, Villetta Barrea, Civitella Alfedena e Barrea). Crossing secular beech woods, wide meadows, “stazzi” (pen sheep) of shepherds, on the tracks of the Apennine Wolf, historical enemy of the shepherds. We will observe the processing of Pecorino and Ricotta cheese, made respecting the old traditions and uses of a land famous for the relation between human beings and nature. We will sleep in hotels and refuges, not forgetting the traditional Abruzzo cooking and the red wine.

PROGRAM
1st day: Arrival to Villetta Barrea in the afternoon. 18.00 meeting with the guide,showing of the program, dinner and overnight stay.
2nd day: VILLETTA BARREA - Riserva INTEGRALE della CAMOSCIARA-CIVITELLA ALFEDENA–VILLETTA BARREA an easy excursion to visit the old part of the Park: Camosciara, with its waterfalls. Crossing the wood of Decontra we will arrive to Villetta Barrea. First day walking along the wild Vallone Lampazzo, habitat of the Marsican brown bear, and going on to an old shepherds “stazzo”. Coasting the mountain called Schienacavallo, we will arrive to Jorio Refuge.
3rd  day: VILLETTA BARREA - CIVITELLA ALFEDENA – VALLE JANNANGHERA – LAGO di BARREA
The third day is dedicated to the village of Civitella Alfedena, famous for the Sanctuary of wolves and links. At last, visit to Valle Jannanghera, typical habitat of the Red Deer, coasting the lake we will arrive to the village of Barrea.
4th  day: OPI - VAL FONDILLO - – M.te AMARO
Excursion in Val Fondillo, characterized by many little rivers, after visiting Tornareccia springs, We will climb Monte Amaro, with a spectacular view on Camosciara, to see the Abruzzo Chamois.
5th day: OPI - VALLE FREDDA- FORCA D’ACERO - MACCHIARVANA – PESCASSEROLI
An easy excursion to visit the “stazzo” (pen sheep) of the shepherd Renato Colasante, one of the last shepherds. It is possible to observe the processing of the cheese, respecting the traditional methods, with the possibility to test the fresh cheese. We will visit the area called Macchiarvana, very interesting on the geological point of view.
6th day: La MACCHIA della ROCCA – PICCO la ROCCA – RIFUGIO di JORIO
This is the day dedicated to the observation of the Marsican brown bear in its own habitat.
Crossing the wild beech of Macchia della Rocca we will rich Rifugio di Iorio.
7th day: CRESTE della ROCCA – M.te TRANQUILLO - La DIFESA – PESCASSEROLI
Panoramic excursion on “Creste”, border between Lazio and Abruzzo, until the  little Church of Monte Tranquillo. During the descendent, we will cross the secular beech wood of Rocca and the wide meadows of Difesa until Pescasseroli.
8th day: breakfast and departure
