The serpent charmers rite for St Dominick in Cocullo
Discovering a very ancient tradition of Abruzzo culture, “Il Rito dei Serpari”, linked to the Italic Tribe called Marsi for the religious celebration of Angizia Goddness. Famous as the most pagan among the Christian rites, in honour of San Domenico, patron of the village. The procession, with St. Dominick’s statue all covered with live serpents, goes through the alleys of Cocullo. Visiting Castrovalva and it is wonderful landscape on Gole del Sagittario, the medieval village of Scanno and its lake and finishing our tour in Pescasseroli in the heart of Abruzzo National Park, the oldest and most important Park in Italy. We will sleep in the little family-hotels and we will test the typical Abruzzo cooking. |

| PROGRAM |
1st day: Arrival to Pescasseroli in the afternoon. 18.00 meeting with the guide, showing of the program, dinner and overnight stay.
2st day: Pescasseroli-Monte Tranquillo.
8.00 breakfast and meeting with the guide. Excursion into the ancient beechwood “la Difesa”, habitat of the Marsican brown bear until the chapel of Monte Tranquillo (1600m)
3nd day: Pescasseroli-V. del Carapale-Scanno
Starting from Valle dell’Atessa, we will cross the Vallone Filarello until the big meadow of Terraegna. From Valico del Carapale, splendid natural terrace with a lovely landscape on the Park, crossed the limestone rocks called “Ciminiere di Scanno”, We start to go down along the valley until the medieval village of Scanno.
4rd day: Scanno-Frattura-Anversa degli Abruzzi Coasting the Lake of Scanno, We will visit the abandoned village of Frattura Vecchia, from here we will walk on a panoramic trail until Valico dell’Immacolata. During the descendent We will visit Castrovalva village in the nature Reserve of Gole del Sagittarrio until Anversa degli Abruzzi.
5th day: Anversa degli Abruzzi-Cocullo
Starting from Cocullo, taking part to “Rito dei Serpari”, religious procession with the statue of San Domenico, covered by many alive snakes; after the religious celebration We will return to Anversa to close the trekking. |
