Escher route

"I do not know any greater pleasure than wandering over hills and valleys, from village to village, feeling the effects of pristine nature and enjoying the unexpected, in great contrast to the life of home".

Eight days walking in the footsteps of Escher, the famous Dutch engraver and graphic artist who, between 1928 and 1935, undertook three journeys between Abruzzo and Molise, of which he left numerous works. Trips that have greatly influenced his life and his work as an artist, so much so that the landscapes of the Abruzzo and Molise Apennines can be found in the works that have made him famous in the world.

A journey dedicated to the landscape: after almost ninety years will be an opportunity to find the places that have inspired the Dutch artist and to reflect on the possible changes that the landscape has undergone. A journey dedicated to the visual arts and beauty, because also other painters and photographers have frequented these valleys. Among them we remember the legendary hermit painter Charles Moulin who elected Le Mainarde in his own home, or the famous photographer Cartier Bresson, who portrayed Scanno's landscape and traditions.

Our journey will start from the famous Benedictine Abbey of Castel San Vincenzo, one of the few testimonies of the Carolingian period (VIII century), where we can admire the extraordinary frescoes of the crypt of the abbot Epifanio, open to the public only recently.

A trip to places with a unique natural landscape: the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise, the Reserve of the Gorges of Sagittario and the slopes of the Regional Park of Velino-Sirente. You walk 6/7 hours a day. You sleep in small family-run hotels, in the guest quarters of a convent, in holiday farms or in small apartments in the historic center on the model of the widespread hotel. The typical Molise and Abruzzo cuisine is served, accompanied by a good glass of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo wine. PAOLO IANNICCA LEADING
