From Majella to Montecassino. Gustav line
A journey in history to not forget
In a historical period like the current one in which nationalisms and sovereignisms re-emerge, we decided to propose a "journey in memory" along the line that during the Second World War was the scene of fierce clashes between the Allied and the German army. We will walk in three regions, Abruzzo, Molise and Lazio, and we will cross two national parks: that of Majella and that of Abruzzo, until we reach the Monastery of Monte Cassino. We will walk from east to west in those places where so many stories of resistance and oppression are intertwined and our path will be turned to peace and brotherhood among peoples, right where, less than eighty years ago, men decided to become war.
We will meet in Lanciano, against the Germans on October 5 and 6 of 1943, and we will leave from Pizzoferrato, a small town of Majella, retracing the exploits of the brigade, a partisan formation from Abruzzo that fought together with the allied army along the front adriatic and also contributed to the liberation of Bologna.
We will cross the Pizzi Mountains, rich in lush vegetation, until we reach Pietransieri, the site of one of the most atrocious Nazi massacres to the detriment of civilians. We will reach the Meta Mountains, introducing ourselves in Ciociaria through the high mountain passes, the kingdom of the chamois and the eagles. We will run into small fortifications built by opposing armies on the heights that dominate the valley. We will visit the Abbey of Monte Cassino, where history, and not only that of the Second World War, has repeatedly left its mark.
We will meet people and tell stories to understand how today remains a legacy of those events that happened to our grandparents or fathers. A journey, without rhetoric, in our next past.
Books and films recommended
To get closer to the issues that we will discuss along the way, we recommend reading the novel La Ciociara by Alberto Moravia or alternatively you can also look at the homonymous film by Vittorio De Sica. PAOLO IANNICCA LEADING
