Tha ancient forest
A 'trip to the magical forest of beech where it was filmed the movie "The Fox and the Child", a place where the trees reach centenarian age, twisted shapes and imaginative.
A leisurely walk through ancient beech trees and cattle-tracks, the perfect place to know the "protagonists" of the Park, such as the Apennine wolf (Canis lupus italicus) and many other "friends" who inhabit the forest of beech as the red fox and the rare White-backed woodpecker or Dalmantino, which prefers the integrity and secular environments like forests of Defense or the more mysterious and rare Rosalia longicorn beetle with long antennae, light blue with ash velvety dark spots, which feeds on the wood of trees, where it blends easily. The Woods of Defense, still called the "Defensa" by locals for its particular form of beech trees, a candlestick, the ancient technique of "topping" and was used by local woodcutters to cut these beautiful beeches.
After a short climb that will lead us on the top of a hill from where you can enjoy a great view over the valley of Pescasseroli, we will continue along the path penetrating into the ancient woodland. After about 20 minutes walk you will find one of the oldest trees that has about 500 years of age, but it is not the only one, from this point on we are in the thick of the forest for centuries. After going through various clearings that alternate with woods and have reached the foot of the Rock Peak, we will return the path of Defense that will lead us back to Pescasseroli.
